This painting is a dialogue between the above and the underground. Growing up in an old courtyard in Beijing before moving to Canada, my every visit back was accompanied by a shock to see the demolition of many old neighbourhoods in the name of modernization. By investigating the boundaries between the man-made and the organic, the life and non-life, and the visible and invisible, I am visualizing old streets spreading over space and time, and their destruction connects with death, decay, and hopefully rebirth. Underneath the ruin is a representation of the mysterious mycelial network communicating and interacting with their mycorrhizal partners. Circles, dots and lines represent elements of the wood wide webs that are vital for diversity and regeneration of life.
